The building was almost empty. After staying behind for an extra hour, and working hard to finish the monthly accounts, Meg hoped her boss would be pleased. She now stood, hovering apprehensively outside Denise Grant's officer.
Holding the sheaf of papers that was enclosed in a black leather folder securely under her arm, Meg glanced through the frosted glass to make sure her boss was there. She ran her fingertips along the nameplate, and then tentatively gave a couple of knocks on the door.
She heard nothing and so knocked again, this time a bit louder.
Still nothing was said, but Meg thought she heard something; just was not sure what.
I can't wait here all night, she thought, and took it upon herself to open the door and go inside Denise's office.
“You're late!”barked Denise. “And did I say you could come in?”
The office was large, carpeted with a polished wooden floor. There were shelves and cabinets around the walls. A drinks cabinet stood in one corner. Denise sat with her back to the door, in a leather swivel chair., gazing out of the window. There was something in her hands but Meg could not quite make out what.
“I'm sorry Miss Grant.” Meg replied meekly. “But I did knock. I'll just put it on your desk and go.” She put the folder down and was just about to leave when the chair swiveled round and she was halted in her tracks with her a sharp order from Denise. She also saw what was in her hands. A riding crop.
“Did I say you could go?” Thwak! She hit the desk with her crop. “Come closer.”
Denise still had her hair up in a bun and wore the glasses. Her dark eyes were as piercing as ever and she still wore her suit, although her jacket was open and some of her shirt buttons were undone. She looked a bit flushed in the face, and Meg wondered why. Her legs were uncrossed and Meg's eyes were drawn to them.
Denise caught her gaze and snapped, “I am not in the habit of waiting!” She held the crop between her two hands, bending it slightly and tapped her foot on the floor impatiently.
"Now!"
