Jude had not wanted to go out, especially as the dark skies threatened a forthcoming storm outside. The atmosphere indoors was not full of sunshine either, however, and so, as usual she complied with his wishes. Always being scared of saying no to him. Terrified of the consequences.
She walked in his shadow these days. Gone were the kind thoughts and loving moments they had first shared together. Now she just felt trapped, with all identity and personality ripped from her soul.
As usual Len wanted to prove himself; make out he was powerful. Mighty even in a battle against the weather's powerful elements. He dragged Jude up the mountainside to the highest cliffs with him; up to where only goats tended to venture.
He had scoffed at seeing her wrap up warm, with coat and scarf over thick jumper and jeans. “Poor Jude,” he mocked. “Always needs protecting.”
High up though he never noticed the warning signs. One step too close to the edge; one sweet, glorious release. She watched the elements claim what was once a man.
As Jude walked back she smiled. No more fear. No cuts and bruises. No shadows. She could be a woman again.
