This particular Thursday turned out to be very different to other days though. George sighed as he sat back in his dining chair. He placed his knife and fork together on the plate in front of him that contained the remains of some bland nondescript microwave meal for one that he had picked up from a supermarket. So often were his meals like this and sometimes he skipped them altogether.
He remembered how Grace had been an excellent cook, always cooked tasty wholesome meals from fresh. George missed those meals, he had never considered himself to be a cook, but was getting so fed up of eating ready meals that he pondered on looking through some of her books to see he could learn a bit. He had not however the courage to try as yet.
Suddenly the front doorbell rang, startling George as he was not expecting anyone to call round. He groaned, heaving himself out of the chair and wondered whether or not he had time to quickly take his plate to the kitchen. The doorbell rang again however, seemingly with a more urgent tone, so he decided upon the latter.
George shuffled heavy footed in his worn out old slippers to the front door, and put the chain on before cautiously opening it partway. Outside stood a woman of medium build in her latter twenties. She had blue eyes, full lips and soft dark curls tumbling down to her shoulders. and wore a powder blue skirt suit. She was looking nervously about her as if looking for someone. With a surprised air he said, “Well, you are the last person I expected to see here.”
“Hello George,” she said an mellow tones. “I hope you don’t mind me calling unannounced.” She sniffed, and her red lips started quivering as she blinked a tear away.
Concerned, he replied, “You had better come in.” George took the chain off allowing the woman to come inside.
