She knew how Daniel prided himself on timekeeping. Nevertheless, she had still tried unsuccessfully to dissuade him for the past week.
“Oh honey, this is their 50th anniversary, a very special occasion. We’ll be expected to attend.”
The words rang in her ears. Elizabeth sighed. Then she gazed hard into the mirror and thought, maybe they won’t notice, or ask me what happened. Oh, who am I kidding? The party will be a nightmare!
“Elizabeth!” Daniel called up again, and she heard footsteps coming upstairs. She watched him come in the room, reflecting in the mirror.
He sidled up behind her, smiling. “You look really beautiful tonight, honey.”
“I know it's your parents, but I don't feel happy. I expect it will be a big party, and I hate explaining to strangers.”
Daniel slipped his arms round his wife, kissing her neck.
“I'll look after you.”
Brushing her hair in a forward fashion , Elizabeth thought of of the car crash. Then, touching the snake like scar on her cheek, she implored, “Be honest. Does this show?”
